Your Questions About Espresso Maker

Steven asks…

Why must a espresso shot go into a drink in 10 seconds?

We’ve owned a professional coffee maker for about a year now. My family’s been a quite the bunch of avid coffee drinkers since I was young. I recently started making me own, and I found that shots cannot be left alone. Espresso shots must go into milk within 10 seconds or it tends to turn bitter.

I hear that in 10 seconds the flavour diminishes, but what causes it to do that? Oxidation, maybe?

admin answers:

Something in the drink might need to be a litle cold to stay in the drink

Your Questions About Espresso Maker

Helen asks…

All-in-one coffee (or espresso) makers?

At the university i go to there is a wolfgang puck vending machine that can serve about 10 different kinds of hot coffee related drinks, it asks you how much sugar how much creamer and how strong you want your coffee to be. i really want to get a coffee maker like this!! Ive done some research but i cant seem to find any all in one coffee machines that put sugar in your coffee for you, other than that they seem to have all the same functions.

http://www.jlhufford.com/super-automatic_espresso_maker_superautomatic_espresso.superautoesp.1.htm

anyone know of a good ALL-in-one (and i mean ALL) coffee makers?

sugar
creamer
strength
flavor (optional)

admin answers:

Considering the cost for the machine putting sugar in my coffee I think I would consider a almost-all-in-one type machine. I have a Capresso by Jura. I like it a lot. I can do cappuccino, latte, espresso, and tea. Since it does hot water I can make hot cocoa for the kids too.

Besides, do you really want a vending machine in your kitchen?

Thomas asks…

Can I use espresso in a French press?

Can I use ground espresso in a French press coffee maker?

Would this be too strong? Would it make a mess?

admin answers:

No, you can’t.

Here’s why:
1) That fine of a grind will over extract & be bitter. Larger chunks require longer for the flavors to release (20-30seconds for espresso vs 3-4 minutes for french press)
2) If you read the instructions included with a french press they warn against using too fine a grind. The reason isn’t that it will get through the filter; it’s that the grounds will clog the filter. If that happens, you won’t be able to easily depress the plunger and the pressure may send scalding bitter coffee all over the place (& you).

As Starbucks says “carmel Machiato” Or Carmel Latte, Mocha Latte, Vanilla Latte… Any kind of Tea Latte… Make sure you if you make one to not make the foam too bubbly its supposed to almost look like whippped cream (of course its not going to state like Whipped cream though, At fisti thought that it would.lol) you can make many kinda of great drinks if you use the steam wand good look and have fun!

Lizzie asks…

Espresso machine for two type of coffees?

My husband and I are looking for automatic (below $700) espresso machine. The problem is that we use both decaff and regular beans. So while many of the automatic machines have grinder I need an option that will allow using other beans.
Are you familiar with such machine?
And yes I’ve checked the different models but I’m having hard time to see if such option is available
And we’re looking for sub $1000 machine (around 500-700$)

admin answers:

On super automatic espresso machines, a bypass doser allows ground coffee to be inserted directly into the machine, bypassing the grinder. This allows switching between two types of coffees easily without having to remove beans from the grinder hopper.

The following models have bypass dosers: Royal Professional, Incanto Deluxe, Xelsis SS, Accademia, Brera, Platinum Vision, Titanium, Platinum Swingup, Impressa C5, Ena5, Impressa J5, Impressa C9, Magnifica 3500, Perfecta 5500M, Gran Dama 6600, and Magnifica 3300.

Update per “Additional Details” note:

The HowToDecide site can be used to add additional constraints such as price. Adding under $800 as a constraint narrows the candidates down to the De’Longhi Magnifica 3300.

Donna asks…

What is the Italian name for the stovetop espresso machine?

admin answers:

Caffettiera

James asks…

What is the name of the espresso machine used at Starbucks?

admin answers:

In the US, all stores has been changed to the “Verisimo”, while in other countries, they might use the “La Marzocco”.

Verisimo is the automatic one.

La Marzocco is the manual one.

I prefer the La Marzocco, it makes me feel more “useful”. Plus it’s alot more fun than just pressing a button.

You get to knock the coffee grinds out of the “Porta Filter”.

Thomas asks…

How does an Espresso machine work?

admin answers:

The principal of Espresso is simply to force, under steam pressure, water thru the bean puck and to condense into the Delicious beverage. How machines do this varies.

Your Questions About Espresso Maker

Sandy asks…

can I make espresso in a reg. coffee maker?

can I make espreso in a reg. coffee maker

admin answers:

No. No matter if you use “espresso” beans, it’s still just coffee. It will have a different flavor depending on the blend, but that’s it.

An Americano is espresso with hot water added to soften it.

If you don’t want to spend at least $700 on a good espresso maker, buy a Moka pot for $30-120. They make the closest thing to real espresso.

George asks…

How do i make an espresso ?

ok i dont have any of them fancy espresso makers or anything, i have just the usual milk sugar coffee grains and obviously a kettle, so like do i use the milk nd sugar or not, and how many teaspoons of the coffee grain should i use ?

admin answers:

You cannot make espresso without something special. You don’t need to spend $1000+, but you need something. If you want a real espresso you can buy what’s called a stove top Moka pot (anywhere from $25-100).

If you’re creative, you can make coffee without special gear (heck, it can be made with a pot on the stove, if needed.

Update: Espresso blends do not make espresso. It is 100% the pot/machine used that decides because it involves pressure. I have about 10 different blended and single origin coffees (I buy green & roast my own). I have 6 different ways to brew (2 for espresso) and I often make coffee using my espresso blends. It just makes coffee with a different character, but it by no means is espresso. I can feel and taste the difference.

Robert asks…

do those stove top espresso makers compare to an $400 espresso machine?

also can you buy seperate steamer thingies?

admin answers:

A ‘stove top Espresso’ maker is NOT a real espresso maker. It makes a cup of coffee that has similar flavor and attributes, but it isn’t espresso.
With that said, Yes…You can get a separate ‘thingy’ (frother) to make a cappuccino like drink.

Your Questions About Espresso Machine

Donald asks…

Good Mocha without Espresso machine?

How do you make a really good mocha but not using an espresso machine?

admin answers:

Mickey Mocha:

4 oz superstrong coffee
2-4 tbsp chocolate sauce
boiled (or nuked) milk.

Think of it like a hot chocolate with some coffee inside. You’ll miss the foam and strength of a real Mocha but the general flavor will be there.

John asks…

Buying my first espresso machine?

I want to buy an espresso machine to make my own lattes and cappuccinos, but I don’t know much about them. Are there certain features that a good espresso machine should have? Any reccomendations? I want a decent one, but probably don’t want to spend over $100. Thanks!

admin answers:

If you’re not too picky, check out the Mr. Coffee ECM-160 at http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-ECM160-Espresso-Machine/dp/B000U6BSI2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303773850&sr=8-1

I don’t drink a lot of espresso, mostly lattes, and bought this two years ago. No major complaints, although I have to use a small pitcher for foaming the milk. If you’re a major espresso snob then you probably won’t like it, but it’s cheap and dependable and produces acceptable espresso.

David asks…

what is a good ESPRESSO machine for under $300?

It is very very important that it has a good steamer, that can steam drinks in taller cups. thank you very much!

admin answers:

I use a stove top Moka Maker. It can steam. It is the “La Pavoti” on this link:

http://kitchenom.com/espresso-machines/29.html

down the page. This site has every espresso and moka maker on these pages.

Here is the exact one I use. I like Starbuck’s and I use this one at home. I have tried a number of the cheaper plug-in
espresso makers and they all burned out or leaked. If you check Amazon.com, many types will be rated. That is helpful for buying many products, to be able to compare reviews.

If you get this model, I use four scoops of fresh ground coffee and fill to the top line. Let it make the coffe, then do your steaming.

Mark asks…

Will an espresso machine set off a fire alarm?

I’m talking more too do with the steam from the milk frother, as I will be using it in a dorm room I want to make sure and not evacuate the whole building

Any help would be appreciated :)
I know how to use one.

admin answers:

Maybe. I doubt it but It depends on how sensitive the smoke alarms are. They can be tricky. One of the rock bands I used to work for (running sound) had a smoke machine. These things work by vaporizing a fluid, commonly called “Smoke Juice.” They were always careful with it so as not to set off smoke alarms. They switched brands of smoke juice to a brand which stated clearly on the label “WILL NOT SET OFF SMOKE ALARMS.” Well guess what? Someone got a little bit too heavy handed with the smoke machine and the smoke alarms went off in a crowded bar. If I were you I’d use it in front of an open window. It would also be a good idea to talk to the RA and maintenance people to get an idea of how sensitive the smoke alarms are and make them aware of your espresso machine. Perhaps do a trial run. However, you should check the rules. They might just tell you aren’t allowed to have it in your room.

Thomas asks…

Just acquired an espresso machine & don’t know how to use it – can anyone help?

Can’t get hold of instructions for my model, but checked out current manuals online & they seem pretty complicated – ‘priming’ them &waiting 6 mins to build pressure; I thought it was just a case of adding water & espresso-ground coffee in the appropriate places! Any clues gratefully received!!

admin answers:

Your right , some people (coffee snobs) think that you need to warm everything like run the machine once before you make espresso or it tastes different & warm the cup. You can try it but i didnt find much differance, though if your gonna froth milk your best to use a metal container & cold , cold milk.

If its a steam machine you will need to wait till the water is hot thats what it means to build pressure when i had a Krups steam espresso maker i tested the steam through the steam wand if it was hot steam would come out.
