Robert asks…

What’s wrong with my espresso machine?

when I get ready to make espresso, and i push start it makes the normal noise but nothing will come out. all the lights are on, it says ready, i’m doing the exact same thing as normal but no espresso.
how do i get to the filter?

admin answers:

What brand / model do you have?

Make sure the reservoir is filled with water, try it without coffee to see if it works. If it works without coffee make sure the portafilter (thing with the handle – holds the coffee) has an insert with holes. Some espresso machines have an insert without holes for back-flushing.

Also, if it’s one of those $25-150 models, they’re not real espresso machines. Get a Moka pot for cheap, good espresso.

Update: To remove portafilter, push handle to the left to unlock it.

Your Questions About Espresso Machine

Ruth asks…

How can i make espresso without any machine ?

How can I make espresso without any machines ,,,,

like turkish coffee method ?

admin answers:

Turkish coffee is very different than espresso, although it’s delicious.

The Bialetti Brikka http://www.espressozone.com/bialetti-brikka-stovetop-espresso-maker-8964.aspx is a stove-top espresso maker that will produce rich crema (the only stove-top moka pot that does). It’s not the same as a good machine, but it’s much better than many of the cheaper espresso machines out there.

Carol asks…

steaming milk with Starbucks Sirena espresso machine?

I am a barista at Starbucks, and I bought the Starbucks Sirena machine for use at home. So far it seems alright but i started steaming milk for use in a latte, and it took forever! Maybe it’s because it was the first time using it to steam, because it seemed to get quicker the longer i used it. Does anyone have this machine and how long does it take you to steam milk to about 160?

admin answers:

It shouldn’t take longer than about 2 minutes. If you think something might be wrong with it, it should have come with a guarantee. Talk to some fellow employees and/or call up the company directly and ask them. There should be a number with the directions for the machine.

The machines you use at work are much stronger and are designed to be really fast (speed of service).

Don’t compare the steaming you do at work to the steaming you do at home! :) I bet it is fine, you are just used to it being really fast!

Susan asks…

Power supply for espresso machine?

I need to power an espresso machine without using an outlet, or rather, away from a source of electricity (wall).

Any ideas?

admin answers:

Just boiling water require way too much energy for batteries.

Boiling water and building the pressure needed would be impossible without electricity.

You could use a stove-top moka pot (Bialetti has one that even produces the signature crema) and set it over a fire.

Mary asks…

can you use a coffee machine to make iced latte or do you have to use a espresso machine?

Your Questions About Espresso Maker

Linda asks…

Can I brew espresso as regular coffee?

I got some samples of espresso and was wondering if i can just put it in my regular coffee maker and make coffee with it? I don’t want the concentrated flavor that espresso has. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks!

admin answers:

You can make it in a regular pot but you won’t be able to get rid of the “espresso” taste.
What you can do to alleviate the intense flavor is mix it with your regular everyday coffee and make a blend.

Betty asks…

what is a “brick” of espresso? help!?

this may sound dumb because i have been drinking espresso for years, but for christmas i just got an at home espresso maker and i am trying to figure out what espresso to buy! i found some that sounds great, but it comes in a vacuum sealed brick! how does this type of espresso keep? does it go stale quickly? is there a special way to keep it once i have opened it? haaalp!

admin answers:

Once you open it transfer the coffee to either an old coffee can or a tupperware type container that you can close securely. I then pop it in the fridge, but I’m not sure that is really necessary.

Mandy asks…

How do I make Cuban Coffe at home?

I love that coffee you get in South Florida that the Cuban stores and restaurants sell. I am not even sure what the proper name is but it is VERY strong and thick. I looked on Yahoo search engine but all the answers I found required you to purchase an espresso maker.

Is there any way to make Cuban coffee at home with regular kitchen utensils? If so how can I do it?

admin answers:

Yes, first of all you do need an espresso machine (preferably a good quality one with a strong pump.). This helps with the brewing process. Second (very important), you need to buy the right coffee. You could by “Pilon Gourmet Espresso”, which is what the people of Miami call Cuban Crack. This is usually sold as a colada which is frothy and served in a small cup which can be divided into smaller shot cups. Whats good about this coffee espresso is that it tastes very flavorful and not to bitter. This is what I drank while hanging out at Cuban restaurants in South Beach. Living in the west coast, its hard to get coffee like that because it’s not sold here. For about $6.60 a 1lb bag, you can visit Javacabana.com and click on the Pilon tab; scroll down to where you see “Pilon Gourmet Espresso”. I think you’ll be happy to be reunited with this coffee.

Jenny asks…

Small Espresso Machine… how to steam milk…?

I have a small espresso maker but can’t find the directions. Do I add water and brew THEN steam the milk? or do I have to add water in a separate process in order to use the steamer…. thanks! :D basically I need to know if the left over steam from brewing is used to steam the milk as well.

admin answers:

For the Espresso Machine you want to brew first. Then after it drains you put milk in to steam it. Hope you like your drink! :) I could use something to wake myself up. XD

Richard asks…

How can I replicate Spanish cafe con leche here in the US?

I’ve tried all sorts of different coffees in my espresso maker as well as different refrigerated and boxed/canned milk. I’m sure someone has figured out how to reproduce this delicious drink.

Gracias.

admin answers:

Spanish Coffee for Breakfast
If you’d like to prepare café con leche like a Spaniard, here are suggestions for a good cup of café:

Use Good Coffee – Use freshly ground coffee beans of a strong variety, such as French Roast. This type of roast makes dark, strong coffee. Skip the coffee that comes in a can. The grind is probably too large and the quality of the coffee beans themselves is probably not the best.

Use Water that Tastes Good – If you like the taste of the water that comes out of your faucet in the kitchen, use it! But, if you do not drink your tap water because it has too many minerals in it, or it tastes of chlorine, then don’t make coffee with it! If it does not taste good enough to drink straight out from the tap, then coffee made with it won’t taste good either. In that case, use filtered or bottled water. If you have a water softener in your house, again we recommend that you use filtered or bottled water, since softened water may have sodium in it that can change the flavor of the coffee.

Make the Coffee in an Espresso Maker – This does not mean you have to purchase a fancy machine! Most Spaniards have a coffee maker similar to the one in the photo. Depending on the size you buy, a simple stove-top espresso maker costs between $10-$20.
To make the coffee, simply fill the bottom portion with cold water. Fill the metal filter area in the middle with finely ground coffee and screw the pieces together. Place the coffee pot on the stove and heat until the water boils up into the top chamber and it fills up. When you hear air spurting and the top of the pot is full of coffee, it’s ready and you can turn the burner off.

Heat the Milk – Although you can heat the milk on the stove top in a pan, it’s hard to clean that up! We have found it is easier to pour the approximate amount of milk we will use into a large cup and put it in the microwave until it is almost boiling. In Spain you’ll probably find most restaurants serving whole milk, but 2% milk makes a great café con leche in our opinion.

Mix Together – Once you’ve heated the milk and the coffee is ready, it is time to mix them. Everyone’s tastes are different and microwaves vary in how much power (watts) they use, so we can’t tell you exactly how much milk to use or how long to leave it in the microwave. We can tell you that the typical proportion is about 1/3 cup of coffee to 2/3 cup hot milk. We recommend putting 1/2 cup of hot milk in a mug first, then slowly adding the hot coffee. If it needs more of one or the other, you can add it until you get it just right!

Do I need to obtain some type of food handlers certificate?

Do I need to obtain some type of food handlers certificate?
I will be serving espresso drinks from a commercial grade espresso maker to our customers/ clients in (construction industry) They will be complimentary. What exactly determines if I need some type of certification?

admin answers:

I don’t think so, as long as there is no food where you are serving, then no you don’t need the food handlers permit.

Mark asks…

How do I use my cappucino machine?

It looks something like this:

http://a1-coffee-makers.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/lello-45900-espresso-maker.jpg

and is a Maxim Expres from the 70′s for which I have no manual. Help?

admin answers:

Well i know you brew the expresso under that little cup thing with the black handle, you put a little mug under there and brew it but i have no idea on the time or measurements, and that silver straw looking thing that points down is where you steam the milk, you probably have to add water in the top or something and the steamer takes a little bit to warm up and it will start shooting steam out of little holes, you put your cup up over where the steam is coming out so your milk will get hot and foamy, then you mix the espresso, steamed milk, and some vanilla extract and suger, and voila, you got a vanilla latte (not so foamy) or cappicino (very light and foamy) good luck, hope i helped a little..

Daniel asks…

Do they have espresso makers in boot camp?

admin answers:

They might, just to fuck with you.

They had a soda machine at the chow hall only we weren’t allowed to even think about it

Caffeine was a unauthorized substance for us

Thomas asks…

Can My Espresso Makers “DO SHOTS”?

I just got a Mr Coffee Espresso Makers (nothing fancy)
And I am confused about “Shots”
Can someone >spell< it out for me? :::enlighten me:::

admin answers:

A shot is just an amount of espresso–one fluid ounce, to be precise, same size as a shot of alcohol. Since espresso is so much more concentrated than typical coffee, you can get the same caffeine as a cup of coffee in a double shot (2 fluid ounces). Most espresso drink recipes will call for shots.

Your Questions About Espresso Machine

Susan asks…

shopping for an espresso machine?

I have no idea where to begin!! I just got a new appartment and i want a small one but a good one. Also whats the secreet to making the best espresso once i get the machine? thx :)
also do i need a burr grinder?
also i hear that you dont want too many inside plastic parts espicially not plastic lines or whatever they call the tubes that run from the pump , through to the frothing wand etc.

admin answers:

Make sure you get one with a detachable water tank, rather than one with a integrated pressurised tank as it is a real pain waiting for the machine to depressurise so you can top up the water.
I have a Sunbeam ristretto (I think I spelt it right), which is a good compact reliable cheap machine, I’m planning to upgrade soon to a model with a built in milk storage container that keeps the milk chilled and frothes it as you need it- I haven’t decided which one to get yet though.

The secret to a good espresso is both the temperature of the water used for brewing- most mof the ones available at the moment are regulated at the correct temperature anyway
Also the volume you are brewing is important, to avoid bitterness you should not put any more than 35ml through a single scoop of grounds.
I have a grinder simply because I like to have maximum control over my coffee, I roast my own as well. A grinder is good for ensuring maximum freshness to your coffee, plus it has that added snobbery value!

Richard asks…

Does anyone have a Morphy Richards 47507 ROMA espresso machine?

I bought one of these a while ago, and I have always found the steam wand to be very bad. It heats the milk up to a luke-warm temperature and hardly foams the milk. Is there anyone who shares this experience or did I manage to buy a dodgy one ?

Thanks !

admin answers:

I have the older Roma model. I just has a valve on the front to switch between steam, off and coffee.

The steam wand on mine produces unlimited steam and it will boil the milk if you leave it on long enough

Mine has a rubber sheath that when above the milk causes air to be sucked down and to help foam it

In my experiance, there is a point just before the liquid boils where it has optimum foam, heat it too far it boils and looses it’s foam.

If you warm the liquid slowly it does not work as well. I find cold milk straight from the fridge works best.

The steam add quite a lot of volume to the milk together with the foam.

I heat mine in a stainless steel insulated mug to get it hot quickly from being very cold.

I fill to a little over one third full, (enough so the sheath top can be below the liquid) switch to steam, as it heats it starts to “ring” the sound changes you have to do it to know what I mean. At that point it is getting hot and I will drop the cup a bit and allow some air to get blown in to build the foam.

Hope this helps
